ABRA 2013 is PERFECT Let me begin by telling you that if you were at the ABRA 2013 concert, good for you. If not, you missed such a great event. Great is even an understatement. Each time I go to an event, especially if I intend to write about it afterwards, I always set expectations before the show. I pre-plan the article I’ll be writing but after last night’s concert, all my pre-planning went to waste. It was definitely more than what I expected, better than most concerts and shows I’ve ever been to and probably bested all hip hop shows done by a Filipino artist, EVER. It was raining all night and the venue (Circuit Makati) is on open grounds. Some people from the audience had their umbrellas and coats with them while most just stood there in the rain waiting with much patience until the show started. Circuit is not a familiar place, being a new concert venue and in the middle of some little street in Makati, it was kinda hard to get there. This didn’t stop Abra fans. They walked through mud and wet grass just to see the concert. Not sure about the audience count, but the place was packed. More than the number of people who show up on most people’s concerts and gigs especially those in the Filipino hip hop scene. I even thought to myself, some people’s gigs even have less people showing up than half of Abra’s production crew, artists and friends who were backstage. Abra opened the show with 2 Abra look-alikes singing Abrakadabra with him. I was standing beside these huge speakers at the side of the stage. I think the damage these booming speakers made on my eardrums is equally damaging with the crazy screams I heard from girls in the audience. Yes, I would say 90% of the audience were Abra fangirls. You wouldn’t even think you were in a hip hop event because there were only a handful of hip hop heads in the crowd, you’d find most of them backstage. There were even a few moms and dads with their little kids (probably less than 10 years old) in the audience and they were singing along. As I was standing there just observing everyone and everything from the audience to the stage to performers, another thought to myself—damn, Abra’s like the Pinoy Bieber. Well, not in a bad way because I like The Bieber (DON’T HATE). So Abra went on with some of his unreleased tracks and many of his hits and sang along with his peers. There was LDP, Ron Henley, Loonie, Smugglaz, Hiphop 22 and more. I didn’t even notice how late it was and by the time the show ended, I thought it was short though it really wasn’t. Just that it was so entertaining that you wouldn’t really mind standing there and watching. The production was PERFECT. There was no dead air, you can’t even tell if there were any technical difficulties. Without a doubt, Abra has become a massive artist and the ABRA 2013 concert, his first big concert just proved this. The best part about it is that Abra remained humble and kept his feet on the ground. I’m not just saying that. He was still the first one to say hi when I saw him and took time to take photos with so many people who were there. He hangs out with friends though the production people seemed to keep on asking him to stay put in one spot. I really wish Abra well and would like to congratulate him and his manager, Josef Amarra for this success. So he went on mainstream, so what? That’s where the money is. At the end of the day, we all need to put food on the table and want to enjoy the good life. He has brought pride to the country’s hip hop scene and people recognize us now. With that being said, thank you Abra!
