ACDP thanks loyal supporters & corrects perception that it will deviate from its Christian principles ACDP NEC member, Steve Swart, today thanked the ACDP’s loyal supporters and corrected a perception that was created following an interview with Media24. “I would like to thank our loyal supporters who voted for the ACDP on Wednesday, and am grateful that we retained our three seats in Parliament. During an interview yesterday with Media 24 on the results of the quiz ‘Which Party Do You Support’, I stated that the ACDP stands for values, honesty and integrity and that this appeals to people of different faiths and even those who have no faith. This was the reason for Media 24’s finding that many people were closely aligned to the ACDPs value system. Regrettably, this did not translate into increased support during this election, but is something that we can build on going forward. I also stated that there is a desire in the nation for value-driven politics, for people of integrity, for servant-hearted leaders, in view of the scandals we’ve had (referring to the controversy surrounding the upgrades to President Zuma’s Nkandla residence). Following this interview, a Media 24 article stated that the ACDP “will market that it is driven by values as opposed to religion and urge people to vote according to their values.” While I understand that in the context of the interview, this may have been the impression created, I most definitely did not intend to convey this sentiment. Christianity lies at the heart of the ACDP and informs the values we espouse. This is set out in our party’s constitution, and is made clear in our election manifesto, which states categorically that we “stand for Christian principles”. We do, however, stand for freedom of religion and enjoy support from members of other faiths, particularly the Jewish community. While we will continue to encourage people to vote for us according to their values, it is on this understanding. We are driven by values formed by our religious beliefs, which we are not prepared to compromise on. To market ourselves as anything else would be deceptive.”
