ACROSS THE POND: Oh Well--Fleetwood Mac (1969) ... In 1979, an American band called the Rockets recorded this song and made it a Top 40 hit at long last. And since then, acts like Ratt, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Jackson and Big Country took their hands at this song. But this legendary blues rocker was recorded first by the five-man British band known as Fleetwood Mac, sung lead on and written by guitarist-singer Peter Green. Oh Well was written in two parts, one with the bluesy sound with Greens lead vocal, the second part a classical influence involved in the instrumental piece. And on this day 45 years ago, it was at No. 2 for the second frustrating week in the UK, not able to get to No. 1 thanks to one of the biggest American hits ever in the UK, the Archies Sugar Sugar, which was No. 1 in Great Britain for eight weeks. Nonetheless, Oh Well finished out a great 1969 for the band formed in 1967 by drummer Mick Fleetwood and bass player John McVie that also included Green, pianist-percussionist Jeremy Spencer and guitarist-vocalist Danny Kirwin. Green (born Peter Greenbaum on October 29, 1946 in Bethnal Green, England) left Fleetwood Mac in 1970. The band, though, remains, as it is in the middle of a long tour with Fleetwood, McVie, former wife Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Enjoy!
