ACROSS THE POND: The Crying Game--Dave Berry (1964) ... Fifty years ago today, 23-year-old teen idol Dave Berry peaked at No. 5 on the UK chart with the first of his three Top 10 hits in the UK, his original recording of The Crying Game. Geoff Stephens, who would become famous for leading the New Vaudeville Band and recording the classic No. 1 U.S. song from 1966, Winchester Cathedral, wrote the song featuring a guy named Big Jim Sullivan on the haunting lead guitar. Also supporting the session on guitar was a 20-year-old session musician named Jimmy Page. The song would have more than likely faded into gray if not for a director named Neil Jordan, who in 1992 brought the song back as the basis behind the motion picture of the same name. Boy George of Culture Club fame recorded the song and it became a big hit all over again, hitting Top 15 in the U.S. and No. 22 in the U.K. Enjoy!
