AFFECTED CITIZENS OF TEESTA COMMUNITY SEMINAR A Community Seminar was conducted on 28th July 2013 at Hee gyathang, Lower Dzongu, North Sikkim, by the Affected Citizens of Teesta in collaboration with the North East People’s Alliance. supported by AIPP. The main Topic of the seminar was Human Rights, Gender Equality, and Land Rights, Justice Delivery Mechanism in India & Climate change and Sustainable Development. The Resource Person for the Legal aspect of the issues was Advocate Mr Sonam Palden Bhutia. A comprehensive coverage on sensitive issues of Human rights violation, land rights and Gender Equality particularly in light of the old Laws and the special laws prevailing in North Sikkim was presented to the participant. The issue of Justice Delivery Mechanism in India, with special focus to the legal Aid available to the scheduled tribes/caste and other categories were fully covered so that the people living in remote areas could avail of such support provided for them. Mr Uygen Palzor lepcha, Prominent social /Environmental Activist of North Sikkim, based in Dzongu gave a presentation on the climate change in light of the Present perils that we have to face and natural calamities both in Sikkim and recent Uttarkhand. Further, a brief explanation of Phenomena of cloud burst and glacier lake outburst flood was explained, along with the Threat and Risk perspective. The seminar was attended by Shir Athup lepcha,Former Minister & President ACT as the Chief Guest,who gave a brief description of all the Laws prevalent in sikkim since the time of Monarchy and also the dilution of various laws to suit various programmes of the successive Governments. The seminar was also addressed by Mr Chopel lepcha,Vice-President ACT and by founder members Mr Norden Lepcha, Mr Dawa lepcha,Mr Gyatso Lepcha,President CLOS and Mr Choden Lepcha The programme was hosted by Ms Mayel mit lepcha, Publicity secretary ACT and welcome address delivered by Mr Tenzing lepcha(coordinator of the Programme)and the vote of Thanks proposed by Mr Karma lepcha,Youth President ACT. A culture programme was presented by students of Gnon sangdong area. The daylong seminar which was held at savonglee complex was also attended by other village elders, youths and Ladies. On the side lines of the seminar, The ACT as an organization resolved to support the “SAVE KABI LUNGTSOK COMMITTEE “to oppose any form of defilement of the sacred Kabi Lungtsok. ACT has also decided to reorganise and reinvent the organization to fulfil the wishes of the indigenous people to scrap all Destructive hydro Electric Power Projects in Dzongu.
