AFGHANISTAN: US soldiers killed hours after US announces peace talks with Taliban. Four US soldiers have been killed in an attack in Afghanistan hours after the US announced it will engage in its first formal direct talks with the Taliban after dropping its long-standing demand that the movement renounce ties with al-Qaeda in order for them to progress. A US official said insurgents attacked Bagram Air Base with "indirect fire", suggesting the soldiers were killed by mortars or rockets. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. "Last night two big rockets were launched at Bagram (air base) which hit the target. Four soldiers are dead and six others are wounded. The rockets caused a major fire," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.
