AFM Missionaries Safe but Cautious Near Ebola Hot Zones Update - Sept. 19, 2014 With the Ebola virus taking a deadly toll in provinces near several Adventist Frontier Missions (AFM) projects in West Africa, AFM is continually monitoring health reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and Doctors without Borders to ensure the safety of our missionaries. Some local operations are being restricted in order to minimize the possibility of exposing AFM personnel to this disease. All AFM missionary teams in West Africa are currently living in regions that are clear of any active reported cases of Ebola. This particular strain of Ebola—a hemorrhagic fever with flu-like symptoms—causes death in about 60 percent of those infected. The Ebola virus is transmitted through bodily fluids of infected people and is thought to be carried by bats and other wild animals, which are hunted for human consumption in many parts of Africa. Though our missionaries are not in immediate danger, AFM headquarters has instructed all missionaries to be cautious. AFM headquarters is also checking directly with missionaries to monitor the situation from the front lines. Where appropriate, missionaries have been instructed to be ready for rapid evacuation if Ebola enters their locale. In addition, other safety protocols are in place. We urgently request your prayers that God will protect our missionaries and the people they serve, and that this serious outbreak will soon pass.
