AIMIM banks on 95000 Muslims in Bandra East The All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is going all out to campaign for Rahebar Khan, their candidate from the Bandra (east) constituency. Senior AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi will address two rallies and also participate in a padyatra for Mr Khan. According to sources, the party is fancying its chances of winning the seat as there are nearly 95,000 Muslim voters out of the 2.18 lakh voters in the constituency. About stepping up the campaign in the constituency, a close aide of Mr Khan said that the corner meetings and public rallies held in the past week in the constituency had seen a huge turnout of Muslims and non-Muslims alike. “People in the constituency are fed-up of being neglected and the communal politics played by the elected representatives. Even though there is a huge Muslim population in the constituency little or nothing has been done to improve their living standard. This is one of the main reasons for people receiving AIMIM with open arms,” said the aide. The constituency that is home to Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray is largely partitioned on religious lines with the Muslims residing in the slums of Bharat Nagar, Behrampada, Naupada and Golibar, while the affluent communities live in and around Kherwadi, MIG and Government Colony. “Akbar Owaisi is a fiery speaker and his speeches have exhorted the Muslims to come together and elect an MLA who will stand up for the rights of all communities,” said Mr Khan. Referring to the fierce speeches of Mr Owaisi who is likened to a tiger in Telangana due to his speeches, a party functionary said that efforts were on to get a live tiger during one of the two rallies that Mr Owaisi was going to address. He, however, refused to divulge details. According to locals, campaigning by other candidates Prakash (Bala) Sawant of Shiv Sena, Sanjeev Bagadi of Congress, Shilpa Sarpotdar of MNS, Santosh Dhuwali of NCP and Krushna Parkar of BJP was lukewarm and so AIMIM was fancying its chances of winning.
