ALL 4RM REV. BANJO AJAO OF 1ST BAPTIST CHURCH KADUNA. TOPIC: WHO IS A DISCIPLE? TEXT: Matthew 11:29 -30 INTRODUCTION: In our last Bible study, the Holy Spirit opened the mind of our understanding to what Discipleship is all about. In the study, we discovered that Discipleship is God’s means of achieving His eternal purpose and central goal of calling any man to Himself to be conformed to the image of His only Son, Jesus Christ. Today, we shall trust the Holy Spirit again to lead us into a discovery of the nature of a Disciple! May you be able to discover yourself whether you are a disciple in Jesus name! The Nature of a Disciple Born – Again: A disciple is, first of all, one who has been BORN AGAIN (John 3:1-7; 1 Cor. 2:13-14; Ezek. 36:26-27). The Disciples Voluntarily yields his neck under the yoke of the Lord Jesus Christ so as to be taught and nurtured by Him until the disciple become like Him (Matt. 11:29-30). Discuss what a yoke is. What is the role(s) of the yoke to the bearer? A Disciple is a man of ONE FOCUS, under one Master. He possesses a single eye, lives a singular life, not an intermix of the natural and spiritual and must have a testimony of a deliverance from sin (1 John3:5-10; Matt. 6:21-24; Luke 1:74-75). A Disciple is a pupil who has voluntarily conceded the pedagogical authority to the teacher so that God’s purpose might be fulfilled (Rom.8:28-29; John6:68-69; Job 13:15). A Disciple is not choosy. He does not mind by what means the Master chooses to hammer him into desired shape (Job 19:25-27; 2 Cor.4:16-17; Rom.8:28). A Disciple loves his master, is loyal, submissive, committed to Him, and is zealous for his master’s honour and interest at all cost. For example, David’s men (1 Chron.11:15-19) ; Peter and John (Acts 4:19-20; 5:32-42); and Paul in (Acts 20:22-24; 21:10-14). Personal Assessment No Discipleship process can turn a man into the image of Jesus, except he has experienced the new birth: Are you born again? Share with us when, where and how you become a Christian. What definite changes in your life did you immediately experience then? What about now? Have you at any time or point experienced a sliding back in this change of life? What caused it? Could you trace this to a lack of discipleship or what? Are you a disciple in the context of today’s study? What areas of your life are in conflict with “who a disciple should be as we learnt in this study? Conclusion: To become a man in Christ, every Christian must be on board on this ‘ship’ called DISCIPLESHIP. Let us pray?
