ALL ABOARD FLORIDA Dyana Boyd Voss Patricia A. Perrone, Stuart Can’t ignore major threat A recent article, “Rail officials mum until report released,” talked about how reluctant the officials from All Aboard Florida are to listen to residents’ concerns about the impact high-speed trains will have on our area. Might I add that the rail officials aren’t the only ones who have been mum about this disastrous plan? I don’t know where our elected officials have been on this issue; but if they really had our best interests at heart, they would have been screaming and yelling to nix the idea from the start. I also think that the reporting on this issue has been sketchy. There have been occasional articles over the last few years, but nothing one would expect on something that could have devastating effects on our local towns. I’m absolutely appalled at how many people in my community know very little about this. There will be 16 trains blasting through our towns, going round trip to Orlando at speeds up to 110 mph. This is in addition to the regular freight trains. How can you ignore this? There is some attention being paid to “quiet zones” and who should pay for it (of course, All Aboard Florida does not think it should have to pay), but that’s totally beside the point. This should never, ever happen and yet, I’ve read that it’s basically a “done deal.” How can that be when The Federal Rail Administration hasn’t even given us a draft of the environmental impact on the Treasure Coast? To those people who think that big government has their best interests at heart, I would just say, be afraid, be very afraid. Unless new tracks are built to the west of our communities, which has been one suggestion, this plan should never, ever be implemented.
