ALL PATIENTS COUNT. I attended the open to the public Horizon - TopicsExpress

ALL PATIENTS COUNT. I attended the open to the public Horizon Board meeting on thurs. Jan 23 in Moncton and once again I asked the members to use their connections to help push forward an independent advocacy/resource center for all patients in N.B. The group approved of this position and passed it on to the minister of health, Mr. Flemming, in Jan. 2013. There it sits. I want to make it perfectly clear that most receive excellent care in one of the best health systems in the world, but we must support those that fall through the cracks or just have unanswered questions. We must promote accountability within our health system. When things go wrong with a patients care, and it does all too often, the tax payers pay the cost. The cost is in the millions of dollars annually in N.B. for adverse events. These are not my figures. They come from independent surveys. When a patient has an adverse event, providing they live, there is no one to help them get answers or advocate on their behalf. Nursing home patients and their loved ones are vulnerable also. During the last almost 4 years I have spoken to doctors and nurses. They are not negative to this cause. They also see a gap in our system, that filled, would help them also. We will all use our health system at some time. We all must trust that we will receive the wonderful care that most receive. In the meantime, there are no designer johnny shirts.
