ALS. My mother died from this horrible disease May 29th, 1999. To me, it seems like everyone is basically choosing to miserably pour a bucket of ice cold water all over themselves in order to get out of donating to the ALS Association. Wouldn’t a better solution be, say, you must donate to the ALS Association and, if you don’t, you must shamefully post a video saying that you did not donate and then pour ice water all over yourself? Many people, for example, don’t even know what ALS is. Even worse, perhaps, they don’t even know who they’re supposed to donate to in order to help treat this disease. The only thing they really know is that they must pour an ice bucket on their head to avoid donating to help ALS. I guess one could make the case that spreading awareness of ALS is a good thing. I also would assume that along with this fad has come those that have, like my friend who discussed the flaws with the ice bucket challenge with me, both completed the ice bucket challenge AND donated to the ALS Association. This, therefore, would be a net gain for the ALS Association — better than the ice bucket challenge never existing at all. My question isn’t necessarily whether the ice bucket challenge is good or bad for ALS. It’s unquestionably a good thing: it’s fun, it’s entertaining, it’s spreading awareness of ALS, and it is — to some degree — helping funnel funding toward the ALS Association. Win-win-win-win. My question is this: is the ice bucket challenge fad a little backwards, or below its capacity of effectiveness? Again, it seems like people are basically showcasing — bragging even, like me putting on my penguin suit — their decision to soak themselves with a bucket of ice water over donating to the ALS Association. My brother, when informed of his nomination, texted me, “Don’t know what ALS is. Does it make you cold?” Touché, brother; that’s precisely my point.
