ALS NEWS ROUNDUP a-love-supreme/roundup.htm POYET LOOKS TO JANUARY... PLAYERS COMING IN Gus Poyet has sensationally admitted that he will go into the January transfer window with the intention of buying several players. Poyet said: People will think we need to sign quality players in January and we do too. We are after several new players in the transfer window, but until then, we can only put out the best of what weve got. It is also thought that we could look to cash in on the likes of Charis Mavrias, David Moberg Karlsson, El-Hadji Ba and Cabral, the players being used sparingly so far this season, however in terms of squad registration only Cabral would prove to be a problem should we sign more foreign players, as the rest of the bunch are under 21 and therefore do not need to be registered. Our chances of survival have been boosted massively by the return of Wes Brown however Poyet concedes that he wont get carried away and will listen to medical advice regarding the defender: I respect the medical staff and when I got here, we had everyone fit which was impressive. I said to them that Ill follow them. If they tell me that Wes needs a rest, then Ill go with them. But we talk to the player and he has a big input into that as well. Whether its Wes, (Steven) Fletcher or Phil (Bardsley) – who have been the ones whove had the problems – its important to have that communication with them. Experience, strength and intelligence is whats needed now. People will think we need quality players and of course we do. But until January, we can only put out the best weve got and Wes is one of them. There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Emanuele Giaccherini recently, the Italian is supposedly unsettled on Wearside and rumours of a move to Inter Milan have materialised, however the 28 year old has admitted he is content at Sunderland and is enjoying his football! Giacch said: We are playing differently under Mr Poyet. Weve changed the mentality among the players since he arrived. And now we are proving that we can play differently too and its an advantage for us. I enjoy playing that way and Im happy to play in this team. Losing Giaccherini in January would be a massive blow to our survival hopes. Although he hasnt featured much under Poyet he is a very talented player, arguably our most talented, and has played an important part in a number of our few goals this season. Giaccherini also discussed the Man City match, which in case youve forgotten we won 1-0. We always do! Giaccherini said: It was a very big win for us. We performed well against Man City who are one of the big teams in the Premier League. We had to give everything because the game was more difficult than others. But we got our goal and did very well in the first half. In the second half, Man City came out and we had to defend a lot more. But it was important that we held on to win. These wins against Man City and Newcastle will help us go forward. There are still 27 games to go and weve only got seven points. So weve got to continue because weve still got a lot to do. Jack Colback has also discussed our style under Poyet, and reckons well be a frustrating team to play against. Jack said: He has shown he likes to play from the back and pass the ball. I remember playing Brighton a couple of years ago in the League Cup, we didnt touch the ball for the first 20 minutes I dont think! If he can get us playing like that itll be great. Its a style of football the fans have not really had up here. If we can play good football, and get results, thats perfect. Former Citizen Adam Johnson has also discussed the City match and how our possession game showed signs of success: [Against Man City] In the first half we were the better team by far and we passed it really well. At times they couldnt get near us, which is a great sign for us. In the second half there were always going to be spells where it was tough but I dont think they really cut us open time after time. Considering the nine men we had second half at Hull it just shows the organisation we have now and the confidence to play and get on the ball. The first half against City, Id say that was one of the best halves of football Ive been involved with since I signed. If you can keep the ball you dont have to run, simple as that. Its three home games, three wins, now theres a couple of good away games for us to pick up points. Weve had some real tough home fixtures so to play the teams in and around us we should be more confident now. Scottish midfielder Charlie Adam has been signing the praises of Steven Fletcher and reckons if Fletchers form continues he could get a move to a bigger club: I think he is as good as anyone down south. Hes been unlucky to have a couple of bad injuries, one with Scotland, another with Sunderland when he hurt his shoulder, but when hes fit hes a top, top striker. If he can keep banging in goals for Sunderland — apart from next week when we play them! — then hell do well. He can get himself another move and play for one of the bigger clubs. I definitely think hes got that in him. Adam of course knows all about moving to a bigger club, as he had a short spell at Liverpool before failing miserably and having to go and play for Stoke to get some first team football. Obviously his opinion is massively valued though. Cheers Charlie. Finally ex-Sunderland flame Martin ONeill has spoken of his intentions to declare Connor Wickham for the Republic of Ireland after learning thet the striker qualifies through his father. ONeill said: I worked with Connor at Sunderland. Steve Bruce bought him, but I thought the price tag concerned him, and for a little while I thought being a professional footballer was enough for Connor, and at that stage that he liked the lifestyle which was all very new to him. But you have to knuckle down, and actually have to go and do something. In my latter days at Sunderland it looked as if he was going to come round, and wanted to become a professional player. He is out on loan at this minute at Sheffield Wednesday, and Connor would be the first to say that to go and play in the Premier League week in, week out is still a big task. But those little spells on loan, particularly this one where he is doing all right, and scored a few goals, will help him. I dont think I am in a position at this minute to turn down anything, and if someone tells me someone is available, particularly someone I have worked with and might have a chance, I would give it some consideration. ONeills comments are quite interesting, as he barely gave Wickham a sniff of the first team at Sunderland, but then again neither has Poyet, raising question marks over whether the lad really is the next Wayne Rooney or in fact is closer to the next Francis Jeffer (no? Exactly). Heres hoping for the former.
