AMAZING NEWS & PROGRESS for Courtney Beckwith! Drum roll please.............Courtney had a fabulous day!! We started with Courtneys facial expressions clearly showing that she was aware that we were there. At times she looked like she was scared and wanted to cry, and others she looked mad, and sometimes she was curling her upper lip looking like her daddy!!! We really felt like something had shifted for her. Early this afternoon, while visiting with Aunt Carol and Aunt Elaine, Courtney Beckwith decided that she was going to open both eyes halfway. She also was obviously aware that we were there and she was tracking us with her eyes. Of course, we all were balling like babies. Aunt Carol went to grab Chuck so he could see for himself. At the perfect time, her speech therapist came into the room. Speech therapy??? I was thinking this lady is crazy, what is she going to be able to do with her at this point. Well, she came in to try a device that fits on her trach so that she will be able to talk with it. She still has some swelling and irritation so she isnt ready for it yet but its good to know that she will be able to talk when she is ready to. The best part is the therapist used an ice cube on courts lips to get her to react and sure enough her little tongue came out of her mouth to lick her lips when she was asked to. She then told court that she had something to put in her hand and it was a washcloth filled with ice. She told Courtney to put her hand out and she did, then told her to open her hand, and she did and then she put it in her hand and told court to hold it tight and she did. It was absolutely amazing to watch her follow commands. It was the moment we were waiting for. She is going to be alright!!!! She was exhausted for the rest of the day as its a lot of stimulation for her brain to process. They said for her to move her thumb takes approximately fifty connections from her brain. Things we take for granted will be very difficult for her for a while. I called Gaylord today and they were full of information and resources for us. They said for her to be able to go there, she had to be awake enough to participate in 1 1/2 hours a day of therapy. Today was about 20 minutes. They will be assessing her this week and though she may not be ready now, they will follow her care and take her should she improve enough. Tom Daley Tomorrow, she is going to be moved to what they call the step down unit and god willing, she will become more and more awake each day and will be able to go right into Gaylord. Thank you all so much for your prayers. Every day, more and more people are reaching out for Courtney. Its just amazing to know how much she is loved. On that note, we have heard that someone has gone to several businesses to put cans out for donations. One restaurant told a family member that it is a young girl that came in with the can. I would love to know who this is. Its very, very sweet and thoughtful!! Thank you to whoever it is!!
