AMERICAN DEFEAT IN VIETNAM, POLITICAL CORRUPTION IN SE ASIA, AND ITS IMPLICATION TO THE 2016 PHILIPPINE ELECTIONS An interesting note from Rene S. Manahan: For the englightenment of Filipinos suffering today from the legacy of corruption prevailing in the country, everything started with the Americans losing in the Vietnam war after the war became unpopular in the mainland. After their defeat in the Vietnam war, the Americans decided just to support dictators in Southeast Asia in order to have a countervailing government against their feared spread of communism. Marcos in the Philippines, Suharto in Indonesia, Park Chung Hee in South Korea, Lee Kuan Yew in Singapore, the military regime in Myanmar, et.al. This way, they can control the dictatorial governments to fight communists and hoping to win without sending a single American Soldier. Marcos and Suharto became the best of buddies during those years and the friendship tranferred to their children Jeffrey and Bongbong. Meanwhile, South Korea and Singapore had benevolent dictators who transformed their country to where the Philippines was after WWII, second only to Japanese economy. The reason why despite the corruption of the Suharto regime Indonesia weathered the economic crises after his fall is because Suharto and his cronies, kept their loot within Indonesia so the economy was not affected much by the stealing of government funds as the funds were channeled back locally through local corpoations and industries. Only now that they are using their money overseas but with the end in view of bringing back to Indonesia the profits from such companies they finance through Manny Pangilinan by the Salim Family of Indonesia. On the other hand, Marcos brought out his loot from the Philippine Government into overseas banks like in Switzerland and United States which bled the Philippine economy dry by 1983 where the Philippine Central Bank went bankrupt and had to rely on the Binondo Central BAnk for foreign currency requirements of the Philippines. Again, the Binondo Central BAnk was controlled by the son of a crony of Marcos, Irwin Ver and the group of Bong Coo, the tenpin bowler. The alleged softness of the Filipino and Indonesian society towards such corrupt families is part of the grand scheme to impoverish the majority of the population by reducing the budget for accessible education, so the uneducated population became prey to any carrots they can dangle to them during elections. To this day, this legacy that Marcos left in the Philippines of using the poor and poverty stricken voter population as their election bailiwick, in return for a few pesos during elections, is being used by the likes of Erap Estrada, Jojo Binay, and in 2010 Manny Villar tried to use them too, only they had to choose between Villar and Erap, had Erap not run in 2010, Manny Villar would have been president instead of PNoy. Now, this coming 2016, Jojo Binay is again using this tactic of using the poor voter population as his election bailiwick of support, unfortunately, to keep them poor after he becomes president, God Willing this will never happen. --- The only solution is to make education accessible to the poor Filipinos as it was before Marcos became president when 50% of the National Budget is allocated to the Department of Education to fund quality education for public schools which I luckily got from elementary to college. Marcos channeled the Education budget from the DECS to the AFP in order to get the military support for his dictatorship. Meanwhile, a generation of Filipinos grew up not getting quality education from public schools and ended up at the mercy of politicians before, during and after each election. The poor voters from the slums and poverty stricken communites have parents who were children during the Marcos dictatorship. And the cycle will transfer to their children unless they are given access to quality education from public schools. With good education, these poor voters, like my parents before me, can choose the correct candidates to vote during elections.
