AN UNDERSTANDING HEART-The Christian Public Servant July 9, 2014 – Wednesday Reading 1 Kings 3:9 (NLT) Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours? Reflection You see it on the news too often. A public servant is unable to govern well because he thinks he alone is in control. Another simply loses touch with God and has difficulty knowing right from wrong. It happens all the time in every country. Scandal results. And it doesn’t just happen at lofty levels of government. It happens in your own workplace. On some days, it may even happen to you and me. You know what I’m talking about. No big scandals but still, you don’t know what direction to take. You get confused as to how to really help a constituent. You can’t resolve an issue or lead your team. It may not be a question of right or wrong, but aren’t there moments when you lose an understanding heart? Before a scandal emerges, or before things just get too out of hand, pray and ask God for His wisdom and discernment. Close the door, or take a walk, and ask God to anoint you with the Holy Spirit! As a Christian Public Servant, seeking His wisdom and guidance is surely the only way to find clarity and understanding. As you go to work this morning, know that you cannot serve alone. You need to ask for an understanding heart. Prayer Lord, I ask for an understanding heart today at work. Grant me wisdom to seek You in all that I do. Guide my thoughts, choices, words, and actions. Remove those things from my heart that are not pleasing to you! In Jesus Name, I pray. Amen. LaShonda Garnes, M.P.A. Senior Fiscal Analyst Public Works & Utilities City of Wichita Wichita, Kansas USA
