APC CHAIRMAN ARRAIGNED IN COURT-REMANDED IN KUJE PRISONS The Chairman of APC Imo State Chief Hilary Ekeh, who was whisked away to Abuja from Owerri on Saturday last week was arraigned before an Abuja Magistrate Court sitting in Zone 6 Abuja upon the complaint of HRH Eze C. Y Illomuanya. The APC Chieftain was arraigned on a 2 count charge of Forgery and Defamation under Sections 362 and 391 of the Penal Code, with both crimes carrying sentence of 14 years and 2 years imprisonment respectively. After reading the plea the Defence Counsel applied for the bail of the accused person, but the prosecution opposed the bail on the grounds that the Nigerian Police granted the accused bail on self recognition but that he jumped the bail and evaded further attempts to arrest him. They informed the Court that the accused person would further jump bail if granted bail. Upon hearing both parties, the Court frowned at the situation where the accused person abused the good will of the Police when he was granted bail by them. The presiding Magistrate therefore granted the Accused person bail on the following conditions; Two Sureties as follows; 1. A surety who must be a Civil Servant of not less than Grade Level 17 in the Federal Civil Service. The surety must reside in Abuja. He must tender his letter of first appointment, last promotion and pay slip. The suretys boss in office must endorse that where surety escapes the Permanent Secretary would be arrested. 2. 2nd Surety must have a property in either Wuse, Maitama or Garki and the C of O must be verified by the Abuja Geographic Information System AGIS. The accused person is now cooling off at the Kuje Prisons having failed to fulfill his bail condition at the moment. It would be recalled that Chief Hillary Ekeh was arrested over allegations of Forgery and Defamation of character, following a publication he sponsored in a newspaper wherein he tendered a purported Judgement of a Court purporting to be the conviction of the Chairman Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Eze C. Y Illomuanya. The judgment according to the Police turned out to be forged after the accused made a confessional statement admitting the falsity. He was arrested by the Police Force Headquarters and granted bail, but was rearrested when he refused to show up on further days he was required.
