APRIL 2014 PREPAREDNESS I had to laugh at one of my Facebook friend’s posts about Utah’s ranking as #11 in states most likely to survive zombie apocalypse. What, we’re not #1?! They must not know about the Relief Society! Then there’s the National Geographic Channel reality show, Doomsday Preppers, to give us a little more unreality. Somewhere in the center ,with prophets of God & lds.org, lies sanity! What I’m doing this month, in my push to do 1 thing (at least) *Get our bikes in working order. If gas pumps aren’t working due to a power outage, you could use your bike as basic transportation.Biking is also a great fitness strategy-(maybe we could ride away from the zombies?). I went down to Needles Peak & had my bike tires puncture proofed for $15- and you can also patronize a local business at the same time. Jeremy Lucas will train you on how to change your flat tire. The time to fix your bike is now, not when disaster has struck. So shock some kids, & hop on your bike. You’ll remember how, I promise. *Walk 10,000 steps/day. Americans only walk an average of 5,117 steps/day, compared to the Swiss at 9,650 & the Japanese at 7,168. At about 2,000 steps/mile, we only have to walk about 2 more miles a day or about 40 minutes in order to catch up, & lose some of our poor statistics. The only certainty in the current health care situation is that we will absolutely have to take responsibility for our own health. I used to think that if I had a magic wand to change one thing for my patients, it would be to change their diet. Now I firmly believe that if everyone walked 10,000 steps, it would revolutionize our world. Those who exercise 7 hours a week have a 40% lower risk of early death compared to those who exercise less than 30 minutes a week, according to a survey from the Mayo Clinic. So a pedometer & a pair of comfy shoes could be the cheapest health investment you could ever make. My 10,000 steps are a little noisy, due to the sound of my thighs clicking, but I can just turn up the music.Vanessa Crezee knows a man at Planet Fitness who works out while on oxygen, so any excuses I was thinking about just evaporated! Rick & Winston are my personal trainers.Winston( and probably Rick) is available on loan to walk anyone who is in need. *Get &/or use your Sun Oven- once again, important to learn now, before disaster strikes. Last Sun-day I made perfect brown rice in my sun oven- 1 cup brown rice + 2-1/4 cups water + 1 tsp sea salt + 1 tbsp olive oil in black covered pot-cook for 2-3 hours, dependent on sun. It’s also perfect for doing a bone-in turkey breast in an oven roasting bag. The meat is really moist & tender, & you really can’t ruin it unless it rains or is cloudy. I am always available for ???, suggestions, & ideas. You can call/text/email me, & I will respond eventually.Take it seriously, so it will be the great, rather than the terrible, day of the Lord! Love you all, & wish you success in your endeavors.
