ARSENALS CAPTAINCY JINX CONTINUES Since after the reign of Tony - TopicsExpress

ARSENALS CAPTAINCY JINX CONTINUES Since after the reign of Tony Adams as Arsenals captain back in 2002, it seems the captaincy at the north London club has been jinxed, five successive captains followed, but were all sold after two or three seasons. Adams became Captain at the age of 21, on the 1st January 1988, and remained as captain for the next 14 years until his retirement in 2002. He was succeeded by Patrick Viera, who Captained the team from 2002 to 2005, he was then sold to Juventus, then came Terry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and Thomas Vermaelen, who looks increasingly likely to follow suit, and that notion has gathered momentum, since it was reported in the Daily Telegraph that Vermaelen has in fact agreed in principle to join Manchester United. Arsenal might be reluctant to sell him to their rivals, but you cannot rule it out as we have seen in the Van Persie transfer, when he joined United. Like Van Persie at the time, Vermaelen has on one year left on his current contract and if Arsenal refuse to let him go, he can sign pre-contract with clubs in January, a risk Arsenal might not run. Again Vermaelen was a peripheral part of the the Arsenal team last season and would be keen to move on to get regular football.
