ART IS NO CHILDS PLAY,AND SO IS MUSIC Listening to Oliver tuku Mtukudzis two albums continuously and randomly on repeat..with a break and listening to Late Paul Chaphukas last four pieces before he passed on-and Im mesmerised beyond ecstasy. The essence in the music from these two icons one departed and the other a celebrated living diety is that their both seem to have the ears of their target audience in mind. This in management theories would be termed as having a service target and strategic objectives as opposed to service delivery in which case it would be their maturity and captivating content of their melodies as opposed their melancholic voices in rhythm-singing. It can be argued that these gentlemen, especially Mtukudzi has his audience captivated by his audio mastery well before he adds picture and live glamour onto his music. No wonder whenever Mtukudzi is in Malawi, those with sober minds and those that really appreciate talent and clout in arts always overfil the audience chairs and spaces. I being one of such, used to think I was being unpatriotic by patronising his shows rather than that of some Malawian urban music artist performing next door. At my age, it is albeit awkward to be often mesmerised by content and maturity in music rather than mere rhythmic noises. And if the likes of up coming artists like Lawi keep in mind their audiences in mind, recognition will come flying from without. It goes without saying that good wine needs no bush--of course to burn--and good music sings for itself. Two friends of mine, one from Zimbabwe and another from the UK seem to share the sentiments saying the first artist they would pick over a thousand times to represent Malawi elsewhere is Lawi. Just like Mtukudzi, Lawis melodious poetic mastery seems to be without any dents and traits of copy&paste. Originality of Mtukudzis music is one thing which adds salt to the soup of its uniqueness and indeed Lawis fascinating mature melodies is what thickens the stew of his music, henceforth their uniquely outstanding taste. I can ostensibly say it loud and clear that I go for Talent, content, maturity and captivating melodies instead of melancholic voices and rhythmic rhetoric. Therefore, you boys with sagging trousers and girls in tight skinny jeans make sure you borrow a leaf from some of these masters of the arts before you start making noises on radios and the meagre television stations-Art is no childs play!
