ARTICLE BY: Amadu Baba Suleman (Fame B. Humble) CIVILIZED SEGREGATION AND PREJUDISM MUST BE STAMP OUT IN SRC ELECTIONS Good people of University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and KNUST I am elated to share with you a quark of my experience of the recently held SRC general elections which ended apparently acrimoniously. These are genuine concerns I believe each one of us ought to be bothered about it. These are matters if disregarded would not only degenerate into chaos and enmity in the not-so-far future but also bring the essence of student leadership down which defeat even the moral standards of our society, and generally, erode the culture of focal and unbiased leadership. As we witness on the national front, the need for immediate solutions and redress to this type of so-called “student politics” in order to ensure sanity in the system is at best non-negotiable or at worse long overdue. What was at the core of that SRC electioneering campaign was partisanship and schism in religion. Honestly, I was compelled by the circumstances to face these challenges cum the neutralization of the untruthful and dishonest campaign messages that were intended to garner votes. During the SRC campaign, at the pinnacle of it, a student who would soon be a sophomore whose name will be withheld as well as others, said boldly that he “would never vote for” me on grounds that he was erroneously made to believe for fact that I supporter/sympathizer of a political party. Later, it was revealed to me by another nameless person that the so-called leaders of TESCON (KNUST – Syi branch) were propagating that I am of a different political party speaking of which the SRC has no party grounds. While this political party affiliation propaganda continued, there was another turn in religion. Knowing verily that I bear an Islamic name some campaigners force-fed the students that I am a Muslim and for that matter vote should not be cast in my favour. God being so generous, all of these were downplayed by the open-minded students who bought into my proposals and thereby voted massively for me which but for clandestine and surreptitious move by the Electoral Commission indeed would have put me on the seat of the presidency. Some people say it is something that has been with us since time immemorial and thus, should be ignored. Some very few also believe it to be politics. However, they take no objection to the fact that we should peacefully coexist in this confined campus of ours. Ladies and gentlemen, men and women of great understanding, I say to you that this is no politics, culture, custom or sanity. This is neither leadership nor followership; lawfulness nor convention. This kind of politics is absolutely no morality. That is civilised segregation, schism, partisanship and insanity. It is also untraditional and immoral. Customarily, it is wrong against our societal norms for all were created equal. This is mutilation of humanity. I am duly bitter about it because it is against Godliness. One does not have to be an NPP/NDC or other political party whatsoever to win an SRC election for it only serves parochial role as well as promote sectional interest. We need not segregate and prejudice before we gain access to top-level positions for it only strengthens the divisiveness already in our society. We need not delineate Christians, Islam, or traditional for we all shall be judged by the Almighty God according to our deeds. The usage of political party affiliation to amass vote guarantees nothing but poor leadership. No one religion, political party, association and the like is better. No single person is righteous. No individual is important than the other. And if this bare truth exists then may we all reconsider to think through our intellectually indefensible disposition. We are all one creature of God having one faith (that there is one God) and with one destiny. Each to his or her own ideas, opinions, beliefs, association and so on but we should all be at one with all to enhance the lives of us and of those who would succeed us. Consequently, let us take a quick detour to the scripture particularly Genesis which reads, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…” and continued in a followed verse, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” I believe if we are collective in our belief in God – Lord of Abraham – we shall prevail over this unconstitutional actions and immoral inaction of the few among us. Let us all frown at this gruesome nature of student politic. Let us also say big NO to such type of unacceptable political principles. And together on the belief in that principle we shall churn out good leaders for the future and our dear country – Ghana to make it a comfortable abode for us all and the generations yet unborn. I have a hope of hell that a time would come perhaps in the future where people from all walks of life could contest an SRC election without having to shilly-shally or better still hesitate when opportunities present itself. My earnest thankfulness to Nana Kwadwo Asare Francis (Obidy), Asamoah Benjamin (Bengor), Mr. Ernest Osei-Asante, Badu Evans, Mensah Courage, Gotah Wisdom, Mal P., Berenice Yaawa Ocran, Rebel, and any other person/persons for their support during the SRC elections. Thank you.
