ARTIST OF THE MONTH ANOUNCED BY GUILD” The Winchester Art Guild has announced Carol Berry as the designated Artist Of The Month for November. A “meet the artist” reception will be held at the 18 West Lex. Ave. Artisans Gifts & Gallery on Thursday, November 6, from 5-8 p.m. The event will feature an exhibit of Berry’s artworks as well as refreshments and live music. Berry delights in watercolor paintings and cross stitch embroidery. While her floral paintings are popular, her skill in painting wildlife brings acclaim. She spent considerable time in Florida at the Big Cat Rescue Center, taking numerous photos which became a passion for learning to paint them in watercolor. Her travels to the United Kingdom triggered many paintings of British historical buildings. Her son’s T-ball games caused a need for an art medium with portability, thus began her interest in cross stitch embroidery. Berry stated, “I love attending to fine details, and both of these art media require that to achieve the realism I enjoy.” Berry started painting in oils when her children were grown, but quickly transitioned to watercolors through self-study, followed by watercolor classes in Lexington given by Connie Tucker. She recalls, “Learning the watercolor painting process after painting in oils was like learning a new language!” In the next year, Berry hopes to pursue portrait painting. Berry owned the Hidden Gallery Frame Shop in Lexington for 2 years, and she will be sharing some of her framing knowledge in a free demonstration on Sunday, November 9, at 2:00 p.m., entitled “Mounting Cross Stitch for Framing.” She will also conduct a workshop on “How to Frame Small Artworks, Photos, Cards, and Documents” on Friday, November 21, 10 a.m. to noon. Registration fee is $20, and supplies will be furnished for a 4x6-inch item whichcan be brought by students. The class is limited to 10 students, who may register on line at winchesterartguild. The registration deadline is November 14. Co-hosting the Artist of the Month event will be Creative Coffees Roastey of Winchester. Owner Debbie Hohman will serve samples of specialty coffees and take orders for holiday gift-giving. Hohman emphasizes the freshness of their products which are highest quality Arabica Beans from Central and South America, and the roasting takes place specifically to customers’ orders to guarantee the freshest coffee delivered within days of the roasting. Music for the evening will be performed by John Shields and his 15-yr. old son also named John Shields. The family recently relocated to Winchester from Colorado Springs, CO. John , the father, has played guitar and bass both as a hobby and semi-professionally, for 27 years, performing in bands ranging from country-blues, to classic rock-n-roll to worship music. The common theme to Johns finger-picking playing style is improvisation, of which he blends elements of country, folk and blues, with a touch of jazz and classical music. John’s son, by the same name, plays piano and guitar. His playing style ranges from light jazz to instrumental blues and classic rock-n-roll. Shields is a retired USAF Contracting Specialist. Both Johns were raised as a military brats. The elder has roots from Harlan, KY (maternal) and Phoenix, AZ (paternal), while the younger from Seminole, FL and Durham, NC. John currently works as a Contracts Negotiator at Bluegrass Station in Avon. John the younger is a 10th grade student at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester. The father-son duo will be performing a variety of music genres at the event, which is free to the public.
