ASBURY PARK — A city police officer stood guard in front of a two-story house on Church Street Sunday, just 12 hours after the body of a 24-year-old Neptune man was found lying there. Police discovered Brandon M. Brown after responding to a 911 call around 3:59 a.m. Sunday in the area of 607 Church St., said Charles Webster, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. Brown died at 4:39 a.m. at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. His death has been ruled a homicide. Webster said the cause of death is pending autopsy results. Brown was listed as a resident of 11th Avenue in Neptune, Webster said. On Sunday afternoon, the multistory home, with peeling siding and a window screen unmoored on an upper floor, was roped off with yellow caution tape. Neighbors said they didn’t know Brown or anything about his death. A resident, who lives across the street from the house but asked not to be identified, said he went outside around 5 a.m. and his house was also roped off. Vickie Johnson, 52, said she was slightly surprised someone was killed on her street because it is usually peaceful here. The neighborhood is one block away from the Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County. Only a few people were outside their homes on Sunday and a large group of youth was seen walking through the neighborhood. Johnson said most of the residents on Church Street are middle-aged. “It’s not too much action on this street,” said Johnson, who recently moved there from Sewall Avenue. “Most of my neighbors are quiet.” Johnson said Brown’s family visited the neighborhood Sunday seeking information about his death. But Johnson said she usually ignores any loud noises she hears outside because it’s normal for Asbury Park. “Gun shots here are like the birds singing,” she said. Anyone with information about Brown’s death is asked to call Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective John Leibfried at 1-800-533-7443 or Asbury Park Police Detective Dan Kowsaluk at 732-502-5770.
