ASU shocked by JCLIP statement on Nagas as “illegal migrants” Angami Students Union(ASU) through its president Zakie Khate and information & press secretary Khriezelhou Vitso, expressed ire at the press statement of convenor publicity committee of the Joint Committee on Implementation of Inner Line Permit System(JCLIP) W.Ananda Meitei for branding Nagas as “illegal migrants” while reacting against the comment made by Nagaland chief minister T.R.Zeliang. While welcoming the initiative of Ananda Meitei in demanding ILP in Manipur, the ASU however questioned the context of his reaction wherein he generalised a “peculiar problem” in Manipur and labelling Nagas as illegal migrants in his statement. ASU claimed that Ananda’s statement had an “ intent of disregard and insult against the Nagas” adding such a statement was a breach of trust between the sister states where the indigenous inhabitants of the north east states, faced grave threats on their very existence from Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants(IBIs).ASU pointed out that the alarming proportion of IBIs in the region, continues to swell each passing day. However, ASU expressed shock and said it was unable to understand the manner in which Ananda Meitei equated Nagas with such a “serious matter with illegal migrants from Bangladesh”. Further, ASU informed Ananda Meitei that no tribals in the north east or even Meiteis require ILP to enter Nagaland or other states in the north east where ILP was implemented. ASU said it was compelled to issue its counter-statement against Ananda Meitei and asked him to note that the issue of illegal migrants, required a collective effort since the problem in the north east was “ not an exclusively peculiar problem”. It said the issue, instead “is a threatening problem to our very existence.” -NP
