ASUU!! If there is one Union that I have been critical of, it is the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ASUU has always portrayed itself as a selfish, self-centred and egoistic Union that doesnt care whose ox is gored in as much as its desires are satisfied. I vividly remember that i criticized their struggle during the last ASUU strike as self-centred and anti-students. Then, many of my friends especially on this desk argued ortherwise saying they are fighting for us. Alas, Now we know better! ASUU has always been a thorn in Students struggle in our Universities. They are the ones that contribute mostly to all the challenges faced by students in our campuses. If the information that ASUU is the one strongly behind the E-fill-in-gap questions which is causing students hardship is true, then we can begin to evaluate how much we need them as a Union or how well we should call their bluff. ASUU is a Union just like our own Student Union. If ASUU can make a stand in the defense of its members, we can also do the same because we are also a Union. It is for us to rise to the defense of our students and protect their interest. Ever since the ASUU strike, how many developments have we seen in the Universities except for the fact that many of our lecturers became richer and bought new vehicles? Maybe, if i become a member of ASUU, I will stop my criticism of them as a loyal Unionist, but until then,they are not our friends and its high time we also take our stand the same way they have taken theirs. I dont know how workable it is, but i think we need students representatives in Timetable and Examinations Committee (TIMTEC) so that some of these policies can be known before hand and we will not be caught off-guard.
