ASYLUM SEEKERS MENTAL DISORDERS By: Radio Australia A leaked report suggests, at least half of the asylum seekers in detention on Nauru and Manus island are suffering from major depression, stress or anxiety. The government contracted report by International Health and Medical Services, says more than one thousand people in the immigration detention are showing clinical symptoms of post dramatic stress disorder. The report also found that rates of distress and mental disorders were high at offshore processing centres, and at detention centres inside Australia. Doctor Chung Chi Yong, a former member of the Australian governments now disbanded Health Advisory Group on Detention, told Radio Australia, the report confirms what was already suspected about the conditions in offshore detention. The environment and the fact that people have such a high level of uncertainty about their future, is a major factor why the rate of this symptom is so high. If processing times are faster, youll have more certainty about the outcome, I suspect you will not see such rates of mental disorders.
