ATCHISON COUNTY, MO -- On Jan. 13 someone found a dead bald eagle near Rock Port and, because it appeared to have been shot down from a tree, reported it to the conservation department. Upon examination, the approximate 4-year-old eagle was found to have been healthy before its shooting, which was carried out by a small caliber rifle. Its illegal---both a state and federal offense---to shoot a bald eagle, which is in violation of the Eagle Protection Act, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
