ATONEMENT-Part 2 Jessica tossed her phone into her handbag and increased her pace. The man behind her hurried too, hollering for her attention. She didnt look back but he eventually caught up with her. Hey! Hey! Excuse me? Jeez! Why the rush? Im not eating you up He grabbed her shoulder and turned her around,to face him. She slapped his hands away. Let go of me! I dont talk to strangers she said in her sternest voice. Fear had begun to overwhelm her. Chill! I just need direction. You see,i came to see someone around here but i lost my way and his phone is switched off. Do you know where Bademosi street is? He asked, panting like he had run a 100m race. Jessica smiled in sympathy. There was nothing to fear. You must be new to lagos, but anyway, see that billboard ahead? The one advertising MTN. When you get there, turn left, walk straight and turn right into the first street you see. Thats the street youre looking for she replied with a smile. The stranger nodded his thanks and started jogging in that direction. He must be in such a haste, she thought. Coincidentally, that was the street she lived. In a matter of minutes she was in her street almost at her home. Bademosi street was a GRA and was quiet at all times of the day. So,when she heard someone shout at her to stop, her defences rose up. Something told her to run and she didnt hesitate, but the weight of her bag slowed her down and the next minute, she was sprawled on the floor, spraining her ankle in the process. The footsteps behind her drew closer and finally stopped. There was silence. She could hear the sound of her blood pumping,in her head as she pressed her face to the asphalt. As a kid,she had believed that turning away from a problem would make it go away but this time,it wasnt working. Her assailant yanked her hair and forced her to stand on her one good leg. She couldnt help the piercing scream that escaped her lips. It was countered by a resounding slap that loosened a few of her teeth. She slumped to the ground in pain, scared for her life. Please dont hurt me she whimpered. Her assailant squatted beside her but she couldnt see his face. He had a face cap drawn down to his nose. I wont hurt you. Trust me He said firmly and produced a handcuff from his pocket and slapped it on her wrists, trapping her hands behind her. His voice was awfully familiar. He picked her up and began walking backwards. When he got to his car,he tossed her in the backseat and pulled his cap back. Doris StillStanding Hey baby He said, grinning from ear to ear. She screamed. He punched her face until she passed out. Looking out for intruding neighbours and seeing none,he drove out of the neighbourhood and into the night..
