We are writing you about AMRIKA CHALO, the hilarious satire on US-Pakistan relations by Pakistan’s leading playwright Shahid Nadeem, to be performed at Georgetown University’s Gonda Theater on January 23rd and 24th at 8:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased here. This will be the first production by Shahid Nadeem ever seen in Washington, and it comes at a time — in the wake of the Peshawar massacre — that humanizing Pakistan, and US-Pakistan relations, seems more important than ever. We hope to show the rarely portrayed humanity of Pakistan by inviting our audiences to laugh together at the foibles of both our governments and our citizens. The “talk back” session after each performance with Shahid Nadeem, Cynthia Schneider, Derek Goldman, members of the cast, and a policy expert will give the audience the opportunity to ask questions about the performance and its subject matter. AMRIKA CHALO, an ambitious production that involves flying twelve Pakistani actors to Washington, housing, feeding, and transporting them for twelve days, plus the production costs, has a budget in excess of $75,000. Georgetown and the Doris Duke Foundation, which awarded Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics funding for Myriad Voices: a Cross-Cultural Performance Festival, of which AMRIKA CHALO grant is part, are covering a significant portion of these costs, in addition to tens of thousands of additional dollars contributed in-kind by Georgetown (staff support, space usage etc.), but still we are obliged to match these funds with a demonstration of support from the wider community, and cannot cover the full cost from existing expenses. Therefore we are working to raise at least $30,000 to make the production possible. In both Pakistan and the US, raising funds for the arts is very challenging, but we hope you will agree that now more than ever Washington audiences need to see the humanity in Pakistan, to see common ground with America, and to laugh at and with Pakistanis, Americans, and Pakistani-Americans at our common shortcomings. We hope very much that you will help us to produce AMRIKA CHALO to the high standards we envision, without having to take shortcuts because of lack of funds.
