*ATTENDING GRADE 11: DAY 15* “Of course there is no formula for success except, perhaps, an unconditional acceptance of life and what it brings.” -Arthur Rubinstein Let’s get the boring updates out of the way first, shall we? We, as in the grade elevens this year, received our OSSLT results today. We wrote the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test last year in grade ten. Surprise, surprise I passed. The writer in me enjoyed the test almost as much as I dreaded it. On to something a little more fascinating. I’m currently “running” (along with my friends) a club called Red Ribbon in my school. Our objective: to raise awareness and help fight HIV/AIDS by fundraising for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Prior to my involvement with RR, I was ignorant anything regarding HIV/AIDS namely, the causes and effects. However, in the past few days my mind’s been blown by the information I’ve found out online about this topic. “Disease” seemed wrong in that sentence. However, in the past few days my mind’s been blown by the information I’ve found out online about this disease. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Nevertheless, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is astounding. Since we are all benevolent, generous, and humanitarians…I hope our school can raise approximately $2,500 for a good cause. The second thing I want to do before I die—second to getting published—is I want to make a difference. Not just a difference in my town or community but for people living on this planet, oceans away. I am more inclined than ever to do something to change the world. I saved the most exciting news last. I’m starting a short story. For reasons unknown to me, I’m not a huge short story writer. I’ve written more novels or book-length manuscripts than I have short stories. Weird, I know. With NaNoWriMo around the corner, my wish is to finish this short story before I tread the novel writing waters once more.
