AUTISM FACT: I often share the literal laugh of the day. What we find comical in our home and share a good laugh over has also been an adjustment as Bug has gotten older. Steve and I both tend to be a bit on the sarcastic side so there have been many many misunderstandings in our home. You see, like most people with Autism Bug is a concrete and VERY literal thinker. This especially effects the way he uses and understands language... Unfortunately Mommy and Daddy havent adjusted our use of language as quickly as we should I suppose. Those things that often cause a laugh for us can cause a huge amount of social anxiety for those on the spectrum. Their literal thinking often being misconstrued in school for non compliance or clowning around. When told to put some elbow grease into it Bug confused looked at his elbow to find his elbow grease. If one were to tell him to shake a leg he would literally shake his leg and if you laughed he wouldnt know why. Likewise if a teacher told him to stop fooling around he would probably feel very upset and confused thinking that she was now giving him opposing directions. Many high functioning kiddos go undiagnosed and so they go through their school careers being misunderstood. When you think of it from their point of view it is maddening really... just something to think about.
