AUXILIARY VERBS Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs. They help us in: (a)-expressing the tense of a verb (present and past continuous tenses, future and future-in-the-past tenses),as in: PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE -She IS cooking now. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE -She WAS cooking yesterday. FUTURE SIMPLE TENSE -She WILL cook tomorrow. FUTURE-IN-THE-PAST SIMPLE TENSE -She WOULD cook. The is,was, will, and would above are examples of auxiliary verbs. (b)-We also use auxiliary verbs to make polite or impolite requests,as in: POLITE REQUEST: -COULD you help me,please? IMPOLITE REQUEST: -CAN you help me,please? The bold could and can above are the auxiliary verbs. (c)-We also use auxiliary verbs to express ability or probability,as in: PROBABILITY: -I MAY help you. ABILITY: -No,thanks,I CAN do it by myself. The may and can above are the auxiliary verbs. Now,do you know that do,too,is an auxiliary verb? Of course,it is,as it shall be seen. Yet,you ought to understand that, the do in the second sentence above(I can DO it by myself) is not used as a helping verb(auxiliary). It is the main(irregular)verb of the sentence. (d)-Auxiliary verbs are also used in forming QUESTION TAGS,as in: -I AM an English teacher,AM I NOT? -We ARE studying English tenses,ARENT WE? The am and are above, used as am I not? and arent we? are the auxiliary verbs. TYPES OF AUXILIARY VERBS There are two types of auxiliary verbs: (1)-Primary auxiliary verbs, which are only three: (a)-be (am,are,is,was, were) (b)-do (does, did) (C)-have (has, had) Note that am,are,is are the present forms of was and were;do and does are for did while have and has are for had.
