AVOID the Camps Bay strip. We already know its over-rated and excels at fleecing tourists with underwhelming food and service. We were specifically asked by foreign friends to take them for sundowners and a meal and, despite our concerns, we ended up at UMI on Thursday evening. There were five of us and we had two rounds of drinks: Nine double gin and tonics (served initially with a slice of CUCUMBER in it!) and R950 (plus tip = R1050) later we left. No nibbles, no peanuts, nothing. Just a sticky, wobbly table and a manager who looked 16 years old and couldnt understand why our French and Italian friends were upset that, after spending a grand on drinks, they couldnt even get a crisp or a peanut. A bowl of 15 oven baked chips costs R35. The managers attitude was take it or leave it. And I can see why. The place was busy. Full of Germans and Dutch and Swedes all looking suitably tanned, but solemn, sipping on something and eating the most pedestrian looking, very pricey food. Next time Ill tell our guests that theyre on their own. We wont be back. Its really, really NOT worth it.
