AWC Helps Students Get Money for College Yuma, AZ (January 23, 2014)—AWC’s Financial Aid Office and the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education (ACPE) are teaming up for the 16th Annual College Goal Sunday. College bound students are encouraged to attend College Goal Sunday on Sunday, February 23 from 2-4 at the Academic Complex Computer Lab (AC Building) on the AWC Main Campus. All students planning to attend ANY college in the fall of 2014 will receive FREE help to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). There will be will computers with internet connections to access the FAFSA online. Although there are 30 state wide sites offered, AWC’s presentation for the past few years has had some of the highest attendance numbers in the state. Locally there will be volunteers to offer information in both English and Spanish. The AWC site will be one of 30 locations statewide sponsored and organized by the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education. The purpose of College Goal Sunday is to assist students, especially minority and first generation college applicants, in completing the FAFSA form, which is their first step toward accessing postsecondary education. State-wide over 300 volunteer financial aid professionals and high school counselors will lend a hand to those completing FAFSA forms and seeking information on the financial aid process. In years past, ACPE has been successful in attracting first-generation applicants and those from low-income homes to College Goal Sunday. These are the families who can most benefit from this program. In 2007, 56% of attendees reported being the first in their immediate families to pursue college, and 52% of the families had an annual income less than $40,000. Since 1997, over 30,000 students and parents have been helped by this annual event. Families can also use the instructions for online completion found on the web site. The mission of ACPE is to expand access and increase success in postsecondary education for Arizona.
