Abba Mussie Zerai. Urgent Appeal: Stop the deportation of Eritrean refugees The Khartoum government is preparing to deport some 200 Eritrean refugees including 15 unaccompanied minors, this deportation is in total violation of the Geneva Convention, as these people fled Eritrea to a regime that is systematically violating the fundamental rights universally recognized to every man and woman. The young Eritreans fleeing from slavery that the regimes subjects for many years under the apparent legality of military service without end. These 200 Eritrean refugees arrived in Sudan to seek asylum instead found themselves in prison with common criminals, suffering a summary trial for illegal entry into the country, with the conviction of a month in jail and a fine of 500 pounds to be paid. These refugees have served the sentence imposed even paying the sum demanded, but still can be found in the other prison term envisaged by the sentence faded already three months ago. The prison is located about 35 km from the capital in the desert, totally degrading conditions for their human dignity, with many of their patients suffering from malaria, dysentery and other problems related also to the poor hygienic and sanitary conditions, hunger and salt water who are forced to drink. Now the greatest threat that the authorities seem to have already concluded an agreement with the Embassy of Eritrea in Khartoum for the deportation of these refugees fled the regime in Asmara. This is to condemn these people further suffering torture and imprisonment by the regime from which they attempted to flee. We call on the international community to intervene to stop this deportation of people who are likely to suffer violations of their rights and are liable arbitrary arrests and torture in the country of origin. Sudan country signatory to the Geneva Convention of 1951 shall respect the right of asylum and UNHCR to deliver these people who prey task and examine their requested political asylum.
