Abbreviations are becoming the order of communication amongst the youth in particular. The practice may be forgiven in text messages but now even in applications for employment people are writing lk dis unconsciously because it is now the norm for them! It troubles me because having seen the value and place of the complete word I see a future of worsening education/learning and especially writing. The most recent WAEC results (70% failure) may be associated with mistakes arising from an inability to write complete sentences in simple English! If you are a practitioner or a parent with a child that is addicted to the vogue, I suggest urgent action to discontinue such destructive shorthand! Also related to this is a noticeable inability amongst the youth to write freehand-and straight on unruled paper! Computers and the like are the cause but it is not enough to hide under technology and write like drunk chickens at play! What happened to the handwriting lessons?
