Abdullahi Suleiman wrote Professor Gerry Egbo:There Goes An Intellectual Colossus:The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Community will not forget the month of December, 2014 in a hurry. No, not because December is a month for conviviality, merryment and festivities. It was the month when death, the unwanted and uninvited visitor came and took away two members of the community. The first visit was on 2nd December, 2014, when it came unnoticed and took away Malam Muhammad Yaya Abubakar, the Head, Department of Urban & Regional Planning. As the University was trying to overcome the anguish of the death of Malam Yaya, death struck once again on Friday, 26th December, 2014 and took away Professor Gerald Egbo popularly known as Gerry Egbo. Professor Gerry Egbo, a distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, died at the Niima Consultants Clinic, Bauchi after a brief illness. Prior to his death, he was the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies. He was also at various times Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Engineering Technology and had diligently served the University in various administrative, Senate and Council Committees. He was also a member of the University Governing Council as the representative of Senate. A native of Ndoni in Rivers State, Professor Egbo had his early education at the Christ the King College, Onitsha, before proceeding to Auto Mechanical Institute, Moscow, Russia, where he had his first degree. After his mandatory National Youth Service, he joined the services of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, as a Graduate Assistant. And from a modest beginning, he was able to raised through the academic ladder to the uneviable rank of Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He had greatly assisted in producing many engineers for the Nigerian Economy and had indeed traversed the ATBU academic landscape like a colossus.No doubt, the sun has finally eclipsed for him .
