Abdur Rahmaan Al Qaari reports that Abu Moosa Ashari (may Allah be pleased with him) once sent a person to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When Umar asked the person about the condition of (some) people, he duly replied. When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the person if there were any recent news, he said, Yes, O Ameerul Mumineen! A person who had become a Muslim, reverted to kufr. What did you do with him, asked Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). We called him and executed him, came the reply. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, Why did you rather not imprison him for three days, feed him bread each day and encourage him to repent? He may then have repented and re-entered Allahs Deen. 0 Allah! I was not present there. 1 did not command it and am not pleased with it now that it has come to my notice. - Classed as Hasan by al Albani in al-Taliqat al-Radiyyah 3/342; al Shafaee in Kitab al Umm, no. 443; Muwatta Malik, Book 36, Hadeeth 868; Musannaf Abdur Razzak, no 32120.
