Abe announces intent to raise sales tax to 8% in April Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Tuesday he will raise the consumption tax as planned to 8 percent in April from the current 5 percent. He also said the government intends to introduce a fresh economic stimulus package to ease the possible negative impact on companies and households from the tax hike. Abe told reporters he would unveil the scale of the package later Tuesday.
