Abia 2015: Dissenting voices against PDP zoning The recent zoning of the governorship ticket by the leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State, ahead of 2015, to Abia-South Senatorial District has been greeted by dissenting voices against such an arrangement. The PDP in the state insists it is not going back on its decision to zone the governorship ticket to Abia South Zone. The decision, taken by the Caucus of Abia State chapter of the PDP, ahead the 2015 governorship election, was greeted with disapproval, especially from aspirants of the party outside the Abia South zone. As at present, three serious PDP governorship aspirants have emerged outside the Abia South zone. They include a serving Senator representing Abia Central zone, Nkechi Nwaogu; the Chief Executive Officer of Diamond Bank, Dr. Alex Otti, who is from Isiala Ngwa North Council Area of Abia Central, and the President of Master Energy Group, Dr. Sampson Uche Ogah, who is from Uturu, in Isiukwuato Council Area of Abia North zone. According to political pundits, the emergency of these aspirants has added more vibrancy as the decision of the PDP runs contrary to equal participation in political association which forms the basis for argument of these aspirants against their party’s decision. However, reaffirming its stand on the decision recently in Umuahia, the State chairman of the party, Senator Emma Nwaka, urged those zoned out from the primaries to be law-abiding members of the party, as it was expected that everyone should toe the line of the party arrangement and respect the rules guiding the party in the state. Nwaka, who described the PDP as a “family,” noted, however, that the party would continue to promote and play the game according to the constitution of the party and sued for a united and formidable team work. He further stressed that the party was not against intending aspirants coming to purchase forms to contest elective positions in the state, adding what the party was trying to do was to ensure harmonization of the process to avoid unnecessary conflict among party members.
