Aboriginal photographic artist Wayne Quilliam recognised With more than 140 exhibitions and numerous International awards one of Australia’s most influential photographic artists A.Professor Wayne Quilliam has been selected as a finalist in one of the world’s most prestigious invitation only photographic awards PrixPICTET 2013, prixpictet “This recognition fortifies my belief that after 20 years of working in Indigenous communities throughout the world I have contributed to the positive reinforcement of cultural advancement. It is my hope this nomination will inspire Australians from every cultural background to share their stories with the world” Wayne said. In the same week one of Wayne’s works was selected as a finalist in the 2013 Bowness Photographic prize, mga.org.au/bowness-prize/info Wayne said “Rather than being a mere observer of the people and places I photograph, I physically and mentally engage allowing the sharing of culture, sharing of stories. This gives the images a unique quality that encourages viewers to engage and participate. Opening a solo show in Havana, Cuba with President Castro one month then sharing my work with more that 20 million people at G’Day LA 2013 then another solo in New York a few weeks later has shown me people expect an experience, a sense of dialogue from my work, the images I present evoke stories”. Co-curator of Wayne’s latest exhibition in Melbourne, Eugenia Flynn states: “As we view the artist’s powerful images we are drawn out of our present and immersed in to the world of Aboriginal Australia.
