About 10 to 15 minutes into "The Heat," I was beginning to think this movie was a lost cause, a retread of other cop-buddy movies. The amount of insult humor was excessive - at least in the early going. But then the movie grew on me. The plot centers on a snooty FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) who joins forces with an abrasive Boston detective (Melissa McCarthy) to bring down a drug lord. Three standout elements: 1. A running gag about a police dog and a house cat. 2. The line "Are you a knock?" Narc is pronounced in a Boston brogue-like "knock" in the scene, to full comic effect. 3. A smart-alecky paramedic who says pretty much what the audience might say in a certain situation that arises in the story. Good show.
