About 7 years ago, on a working trip to the US, I was with my then business partner and friend at office when he received a call from his wife that their then 5-year old daughter had gone adrift in the Westfield Valley Fair Mall, San Jose. I had never seen him lose composure except this one time, and could understand why subsequently, so we got into his car and made good time from Santa Clara to San Jose. The child was eventually located after a couple of hours, but in those two hours and then subsequently from another friend way up there in matters pertaining to new cannibalism (organ trading is one part) , what I learnt about child kidnap rings, organ trading, the sheer numbers even in peaceful and safe Silicon Valley, have stayed with me as much as stories I heard in Doon valley from old-timers talking about missionaries who would take children away in boxes to eat and have sport with. This was pretty much in line with what I heard in the rest of the world - up on Mt. St. Helens with native Americans, at a deep-water port way inside the Amazon in a bar built on stilts, in war-torn Angola and Mozambique from rebels chasing their colonials out and way up there in Muroran, Hokkaido. We forget that it is the shock and awe kind of approach that western civilisation brings to the table repeatedly and this report is not as far fetched as it sounds, either.
