About Angie Ferro .. One of the premier actresses of the country, Angelica “Angie” Caballero Ferro was born on August 4, 1937 in Baleno, Masbate to peasant parents who tilled their own family farm. Her involvement with theater started with Cecile Guidote Alvarez’ PETA in 1969 where Ms. Ferro was one of the pioneer resident actors. As a theater actress, her notable productions include Trojan Women as Hecuba directed by Tony Mabesa at the Metropolitan Theatre. Several years later, she reprised the same role under the helm of a visiting Greek director, Nicos Shiafkalis, for Balintataw Film and Theater. Other memorable roles include the Mother in Federico Garcia Lorca’s “Blood Wedding,” and as Inang Bayan in Aurelio Tolentino’s “Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas”. She also appeared as lead in Teatro Pilipino productions, “Ang Butihing Babae ng Setsuan” and “Ang Reyna at Mga Rebelde” directed by National Artist Rolando Tinio. In 1971, she founded a community theatre known as Dulaang Bonifacio Foundation, Inc. As a director, she has done most of her works with student theater organizations in the universities including “Ang Paglilitis” which she translated and produced from Adrian Cristobal’s play, “The Trial.” She also adapted Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere for stage. For all her contributions in theater, she received the Araw ng Maynila Award in 1996. Ms. Angie Ferro is a rare performer who easily moves from theatre to movies to TV and radio. Her film and TV credits consist of nearly a hundred starting in 1970 as a Villager in an FPJ film titled Santiago . In 1978, she won as best supporting actress in FAMAS for the Celso Ad Castillo’s Pagputi ng Uwak…Pag-itim ng Tagak and was a recipient of the Salakot Award in the Iloilo Film Festival in the same year. She was also consistently cited for her performance as an actress for a dual role in the San Francisco International Film Festival. She was again nominated by FAMAS in the same category in the film “Isla” in 1986. In 2004 when the independent cinema in the Philippines was starting, Ms. Ferro was in the forefront appearing in the Lav Diaz film “Evolution of a Filipino Family” where she was nominated as best actress in the Gawad URIAN Awards. Currently, she’s visible on TV with her most recent role as the chief priestess in “Amaya,” a high rating TV series on GMA. Ms. Ferro is also an acting teacher.
