About a month ago I saw a car pulled over in West Hollywood by the police for making a right turn from the left lane. This was in front of the cafe where I write. In the car were a young Latino, a young African-American, and an older Latino, all men. The cops approached the car with their hands on their guns, yelled at the occupants to put their hands out the windows, then pulled each one out, searched him, handcuffed him, then put him in the squad car while the next one was treated in the same fashion. They radioed in their IDs so they could run their records. While this was being processed the cops searched the car very thoroughly. Finding nothing, including anything on their record that would justify taking them to jail, the men were finally released. Today I was pulled over for making an illegal left turn. The cop didnt have his hand on his gun as he asked me for my license. I stayed in my car as he ran my name and filled out the ticket. He came back, handed me the ticket and told me to drive safely and have a nice day. I never once thought this situation would end up with me dead. I hate when people drop the Check your privilege bomb just to shut down a discussion, but if not checking our privilege, we should definitely be examining our perspective.
