About once a week, I get a private message from one of you asking if I know of a job in Sunset Park. So let me share with everyone some advice (you may know someone who needs a job so share it with them). Make up a one page, large print resume. List your address (places love it if you are local), list your last job (and/or a reason if you havent worked in awhile - raising kids, caring for family member, etc), and extra skills - bi-lingual, sales experience, computer programs you are familiar with, etc. Take a folder of these with you, dress business-like (not like going out to party) and walk along 5th Avenue. If you are looking for a retail job, go in each and every store. Ask to see the manager, introduce yourself - with a big big smile (be very upbeat) and explain in three sentences what you are looking for. When you are told that there are no jobs, make your smile even bigger and say Well thank you for seeing me and can I please leave my resume with you in case a position opens later?. Leave with a cheerful goodbye, say goodbye to the other people working there as you pass them by. In two weeks stop by again - I was passing by, Im still looking for a job and thought I would just stop in and say hello...again big smile and happy. 5th Avenue also has medical offices - if that is the position you want - concentrate on those...and dont be afraid to go to Bay Ridge too. For other types of jobs - get addresses - like not for profits - and do the same. The key is personality and no mysterious blanks on your resume. Oh, even bigger tip - never give up...you have to go to dozens and dozens sometimes...but dont be negative - make it a thing you do every Tuesday - the best day to get hired...lol Good Luck.
