Avraham’s Call Genesis 12:1 Now the Lord had said to Avram: Get out Lech Lecha לֶךְ-לְךָ of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. : The expression “Get out Lech Lecha לֶךְ-לְךָ” literally means “go for yourself:” Avraham is called to leave his homeland, family and customs to go on a personal quest. It is a new start for him and his wife. We find this idea again when the 12 spies were sent to the Promised Land: Numbers 13:1 (13–2) And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying, Send for yourself, shelach lecha, שְׁלַח-לְךָ men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them. Avraham leaves to “look for himself” this land of the Promise, but unlike the spies, Avraham believed and by his faith, he became father of a multitude: Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Avraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Yitzchak and Yaakov, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. ⇒ A geographical move often implies a new direction and a new step. ⇒ With a new mission also comes new trials that transform us into His glory, our faith is thus tested. While we serve our Creator, we are transformed to His glory. : The expression “Go for yourself Lech Lecha לֶךְ-לְךָ” is employed a second time in the passage concerning the sacrifice of Yitzchak: Genesis 22:2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Yitzchak, whom you love, and go Lech Lecha לֶךְ-לְךָ to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” : Avraham receives the commandment to go meet his Savior, imaged by Yitzchak on the altar: “to a land that I will show you” becomes “to a mountain that I will show you.” This is the purpose of every man on earth: to go meet his Savior. Avraham thus got a glimpse of Yeshua and rejoiced: Genesis 22:3-4 So Avraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Yitzchak his son; (…) Then on the third day Avraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. John 8:56-58 our father Avraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad. Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Avraham?” Yeshua said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Avraham was, I am.” ⇒ Salvation is a personal quest, an adventure beginning with death to one’s past. ℵ: The expression “Go out Lech Lecha לֶךְ-לְךָ” vocalized differently can also mean: Go! Go! lech! lech! Two departures, alluding to the two exiles following the destruction of the two Temples . This is confirmed by the word “will show you ar’echa אַרְאֶך” that appears again in the prophecy of Zachariah about Israel‘s exiles: The numerical value of the word “will show you ar’echa אַרְאֶך” is the same as “with the clouds, baananim בעננים“. Baal Haturim sees there an allusion to the cloud that followed the children of Israel in the desert to protect them and show them the way to the Promised Land. : This cloud sheltered the Messiah and when He comes back to gather His chosen, the whole world will see Him this time: Matthew 17:5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” Daniel 7:13 I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. Luke 21:27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. The excellence of these revelations leads Avraham to leave with the vision of the Messiah in mind. But he will have to prove his obedience by passing certain trials before becoming the Patriarch of faith…
