About three years ago, I saw a documentary on John Lennon that I found surprising, refreshingly so. Now, I am no expert on the man; what I saw was likely a very narrow view of his beliefs and practices. What I did see, however, was a view of peace that was compatible, or should have been, with a wide variety of viewpoints on the nature of war. Lennons take on things, according to this show, was to give peace a chance. Therein, he did not advocate pure pacificism, he left room for self-defense. He knew, seemingly, that disarmament of the world, would not happen rapdily. Instead, he advocated trying peace as a practice and seeing the results. He left it up to the person / group / nation to decide, though he was confident that peace would out because people liked the results. The love-ins and other spectacles were just that; they were designed to give him space to talk and create awareness of his ideas. They were meant to be provocative, in part, to garner attention to something more important.
