About two thirds of the way through Stephen Kingss Revival I was - TopicsExpress

About two thirds of the way through Stephen Kingss Revival I was beginning to accept the fact that for the past three or four of his novels he had switched from telling throat-ripping horror stories whispered in a dark ally to slightly fanciful weather reports told from a porch-side rocking chair. Sure, they were told well, but they were also mundane. But then for the last quarter, bottom of the ninth, fourth and inches, whatever sports metaphor youd like, it flipped. He was leaning very heavily on the H.P. Lovecraft crutch the entire time, but never really put it to use until the very end. The last two chapters make the previous ones stronger. Too bad he couldnt pull that off while one was reading those at the time. Revival is basically a very drawn out Lovecraftian tale. And Lovecraft is not something that needs drawing out. It follows the traditional set up, things get ever so slightly, like almost not all, weirder as the story builds. Its not at all surprising, but the scope King is able to add does pay off in the end. So, as has been the case for many years now, Revival isnt going to win over new fans, but its probably the most horror-like of his more recent novels. It just takes a few hundred pages to get there.
