Abu Dhabi Corniche beach set for expansion Development to occupy 16,000 square metres to be completed in 2015 Abu Dhabi Municipality has invited the private sector to take part in the expansion of the Corniche. Abu Dhabi: With over 1 million individuals visiting the Abu Dhabi Corniche beach each year, the Abu Dhabi City Municipality has launched a tender for the private sector be a part of area’s transformation. As part of the project titled W10 F&B Plaza, an underground parking structure that can accommodate up to 800 vehicles will be set up in addition to an above-ground green area containing popular food and beverage outlets. For those on foot, a pedestrian underpass will provide access to the beach. The total development will take up 16,000 square-metres. “Our aim is to increase the range and quality of public facilities as part of the government’s long term programme to provide clusters of services and leisure activities along the prestigious Corniche beachfront – a location of major significance within Abu Dhabi”, said Rashid Bin Ali Al Omaira, investment and asset adviser for the General Manager’s Office at Abu Dhabi City Municipality. “By reinforcing the Corniche as one of the defining landmarks of the city, visited by over one million people each year, the W10 F&B Plaza development provides an exciting opportunity for the private sector to play a vital part in infrastructure improvements that support the Abu Dhabi 2030 vision,” he added. The project marks the second expansion to be made to the Corniche beach, and is considered an enhancement to the current public beach. The food and beverage outlets will lie opposite the beach and the project is said to be completed by the beginning of 2015. The current public beach will remain unaffected when construction works commence. The Abu Dhabi Corniche beach is home to a variety of water and beach sports and its family section provides a designated area for women and children in the heart of the city. Abu Dhabi resident Reem Sayadi and university student told Gulf News: “Although the entire expansion may not be entirely necessary in my opinion, I certainly do feel that the parking lots will be of great use. I am also sure that plenty of people will benefit from the expansion, whether we realise this now or not, especially when the weather is nice.” The Corniche beach also sees many of Abu Dhabi’s major concerts which often take place on New Year’s eve, or during many events in the capital such as Yasalam’s after-race concerts. The Corniche is marked at one end by the breakwater that includes the Marina Mall and Abu Dhabi theatre, while the other tip touches the traditional port and Iranian souq.
